Report: Jackson backers sought cash for Ill. gov.

CHICAGO – Businessmen with ties to both Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson discussed raising $1 million for Blagojevich to help persuade him to appoint Jackson to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, according to a published report.

Citing unnamed sources, the Chicago Tribune reports in a story for Friday's editions that businessman Raghuveer Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi told attendees at an Oct. 31 meeting that they needed to raise the money for the governor to ensure Jackson's appointment.

"Raghu said he needed to raise a million for Rod to make sure Jesse got the seat," an unidentified source who attended the meeting told the Tribune. Blagojevich also attended the meeting, which was sponsored by Nayak, an Oak Brook businessman.

A message left at a listing for Raghuveer Nayak in Oak Brook was not immediately returned early Friday. No published listing for Bedi could be found.

Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on federal corruption charges that allege, among other things, a brazen scheme to put Obama's vacant Senate seat up for sale.

According to the FBI complaint, the Oct. 31 meeting took place the same day federal prosecutors intercepted a conversation in which Blagojevich claims he'd been approached by a representative for an unnamed "Senate Candidate 5" who offered cash in exchange for the Senate seat.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Jackson was the candidate.

"We were approached 'pay to play,'" Blagojevich said in the call. The candidate would raise $500,000 for Blagojevich, and an emissary would raise an additional $1 million, according to the conversation.

Jackson spokesman Rick Bryant told the Tribune that while Jackson discussed the Senate seat with Nayak, he never asked him to do anything.

Nayak, 54, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Blagojevich and is also close to the Jackson family. Bedi has also been a Blagojevich fundraiser.

The Oct. 31 meeting led to a Blagojevich fundraiser held Saturday that was co-sponsored by Nayak. The governor attended, as did Jackson's brother Jonathan, who went into business with Nayak several years ago, according to the newspaper report.

Two days later, Jackson met with Blagojevich to discuss the Senate seat.

Yes, yes, I know that Dick Morris is a weasel and a very partisan conservative opportunistic hack, but all of this is very interesting. Is any of it true? or all innuendo?

DON'T FIRE FITZ

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published in the New York Post on December 11, 2008

When Bill Clinton took office in January 1993, he was hearing the foot steps of Little Rock US Attorney Charles Banks, who was hot on his heels as he probed charges of corruption that swirled around the Watergate land deal. President Clinton decided, in one of his first acts, to fire all 93 US Attorneys - claiming he wanted a clean slate.

Many insiders suspected that the other 92 bodies were a cover for firing Banks and replacing him with Paula Casey, a Clinton ally.

US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald's indictment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich raises a similar question as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office. Will the new president fire Fitzgerald?

In view of the often-close relationship between Blagojevich, Obama and other key members of the incoming administration, it would be a travesty were Fitzgerald's head to roll now. Consider:

* Fitzgerald has already indicted and convicted Antoin Rezko, Obama's friend and key financial backer who may have arranged for the then-state-senator to acquire his home and adjoining property on advantageous terms.

* Obama and incoming Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel were among an intimate circle of Blagojevich advisers when Blago first ran for governor in 2002. Emanuel says that he, Obama and others "participated in a small group that met weekly when Rod was running for governor. We basically laid out the general election, Barack and I and these two."

* Obama adviser and media guru David Axelrod worked for Blagojevich in his races for Congress before he ran for governor, although Axelrod (a consultant of uncommon integrity) refused to work for Blagojevich when he ran for governor.

* Even though Fitzgerald had already made clear that he was investigating the governor, following up "very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud" and noted that he had "a number of credible witnesses," Obama vigorously backed Blagojevich for re-election in 2006. At the Illinois State Fair that August, ABC's Jake Tapper reported that Obama told the crowd, "We've got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois."

Fitzgerald has clearly signaled that his probe doesn't involve Obama, but who knows if it might lead to other Illinois Democrats in the new president's coterie of aides?

If Fitzgerald stays on the job, we can be sure the investigation will be pursued honestly and thoroughly. His Inspector Javert-like pursuit of the Valerie Plame scandal, aimed at the heart of the Bush administration, should be more than enough proof of his nonpolitical credentials.

Obama shouldn't hesitate to replace Fitzgerald once his work is done. But if he removes the Illinois US attorney right off the bat, we'll be left wondering if he did so to cover something up.

The first thing I wanna know is ... with names like this: Rod Blagojevich .... Raghuveer Nayak ... Rajinder Bedi

... where are these people from? Confused

Secondly, this doesn't really surprise me. It was pretty obvious to me from what JJ, Jr. said - or rather, what he didn't say - during his "I didn't do it" news conference speech that it went down like that: 'I didn't tell anybody to do it, I didn't do it myself, but I know it was done, and I know who did it'.

Hmmmmmm .... I wonder if he'll have to call Daddy to grease a few (politically-wall-placed) palms to get himself outta this one? Confused
Triple J stated that he hired legal counsel during his press conference.

If it's true:

Supporters don't inadverntly discuss or initiate raising that amount of cash to secure a senate seat and the potential candidate is left completely in the dark? No way.

Triple J won't or really can't get much help from Daddy Double J on this one and be openly public. If Double J wasn't busy alluding to "cutting off nuts" earlier this year then maybe he could help out but I think that Triple J is on this own on this one.

As for the Senate seat? Elimination by association. Double J will be cemented in Congress and hopefully re-elected.

Blagojevic ... The name is Serbian.

Raghuveer Nayak ... Rajinder Bedi

I'd guess India or Pakistan.

This jolted me to remember when persons who thought their name could be a deterrent to assimilating into American society would 'Anglicize' the name.

Adamsky became Adams; Bedi might have become Beatty;, or Nayak might have become Nayer.

Obama to O'Brian????

There's been quite an influx of them into the country as of late. Many seemed to be involved where the money is.

I wonder did they come with their own? Or did they 'sniff it out' and have infused themselves into it's company after they got here? Confused
If JJJ was going to pay to play then he is just stupid. Where is his confidence in his own ability to run and win that seat fair and square? Why get caught up in that and will be always in fear that the truth will come out.
