This is purely self-indulgent! Please help add to this list of cds or esingles to build the ULTIMATE African-inspired music list. Pls list artist and name of cd/single and a link if it's a download. Old, new or obscure is fine. If we ever have an AA.org party... this list will get those booties bumping and twining (!) I'll start the list off with these... You must listen to the female vocal group Zap Mama:
I especially recommend Adventures In Afropea I and Ancestry In Progress... These sistas make Bobby McFerrin look silly. |

I own this CD, but I haven't listened to it a lot. "Synchro System." I especially love music I can groove to and this holds true more most of the international music I listen to. FireFly, how 'bout some Amampondo? I love Electric Pondoland even though it's all collaborations and remixes. I also have their (unmixed) An Image of Africa. I also LOVE Hugh Masekela's The Chisa Years: 1965-1975 (Rare and Unreleased). South African kwaito is cool. It reminds me of 80's "house music." The first time I ever heard of Angelique Kidjo was on BET years ago. I've heard good things about the late Brenda Fassie. I only have one of her songs, though. *********************************** “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.†-- James Baldwin |

I've spent some time on that site which was a good jumping off point to track down some interesting tunes... I haven't downloaded any tracks from the web yet - I'm the only person in the galaxy without an ipod - but I have a mean cd collection!
I found another site today through a latino salsa magazine - it's not bad http://www.diaspora.com.au except how can I choose only one between latino, brazillian, african and reggae ?? |

How did I forget Issa Bagayogo's "Timbuktu"?
FF, getting into the mp3 player craze was great. I'd never been big on carrying several CDs just to listen to 2 or 3 songs on each. (This is one reason why I like greatest hits compilations.) I have quite a few whole CDs on my player, but I also like creating folders (on iPods I guess there called "playlists") that contain a variety of songs and genres. *********************************** “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.†-- James Baldwin |

You are not the only person... Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Egungun, Egungun ni t'aiye ati jo! Ancestos, Ancestors come to earth and dance! "I'm sick of the war and the civilization that created it. Let's look to our dreams, and the magical; to the creations of the so-called primitive peoples for new inspirations." - Jaques Vache and Andre Breton "Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone." -John Maynard "You know that in our country there were even matriarchal societies where women were the most important element. On the Bijagos islands they had queens. They were not queens because they were the daughters of kings. They had queens succeeding queens. The religious leaders were women too..." -- Amilcar Cabral, Return to the Source, 1973 |

not just a plug... but, my good friend Mamadou Diabate is a talented kora musician from a long line of griots. Check out his site http://www.mamadoukora.com. He is a native Malian and is very dedicated to introducing us in the West to this classic music form. I also love anything by Fela but especially the classic O D O O.
