I'd like this to be a fairly organic spot where I can post questions and ask you about ... well... things African American or African.

To begin at the beginning... I'm doing home-study on African American history and culture. What that means is there are no African American history studies here in Australia, so I've been trawling the web and putting together a book list from University Reading Lists in the USA - including Berkely, Duke, Harvard etc. I'm dividing my reading into several areas: the top ones are History, Fiction + Poetry, Art + Culture, Media Study + Film, and to a lesser degree, philosophy + religion.

I also have to give a warm thanks to some of you who have sent and posted books you recommend or suggest to guide me. Very much appreciated.

Soooo.... I would like the opportunity to ask a few questions along the way - remember I'm starting pretty much from scratch - that will help my understanding or maybe point out an inaccuracy.

Once I buckle down I might even post an essay about what I'm reading about... but that's further down the track.

I'll post my current Reading List in each of the sections soon.... meantime jump in with anything you want to suggest or critique.
