Hotep Family,
When I took exception to Jim's comments I was unaware that he was of european heritage. I found out through exchanging e-mails with him. He never once indicated his heritage. It was his short 'one sentence' replys to my e-mails that made me know; along with the various religious web pages he referred me to. One web page I watched and almost puked, the other I had absoultely no interest because it only solidified by beliefs. I tried to create a dialog between us. However, by his actions, I know this will never be possible. So be it. My e-mail address is: cpohio1940@aol.com if any one is interested. I love dialoging with my brothers and sisters so long as no disrespect occurs. We can agree to agree or agree to disagree but mutual respect must prevail. I can learn from you and you can learn from me. It is called 'an exchange of ideas'. Hotep, Black Family. Listen to www.wblr.com. Listen and learn the truth that will make you free. OLU |

All depends. I look at this in many ways:
1. Yes, I am an African of American nationality. 2. I'm not African, but an American of African descent. 3. I'm an American of African/Native American/European descent. 4. Everyone is African. 5. I am both African and American. Well, what should it be? |

Well, what should it be?---Stranger Recoginzing your ethnicity is always good. Citizenship: Americzn Ethnicity: African American 'African American' is the ethnicity of every American of unknown African ancestry. That is 'what it should be'. Simply 'African' cannot do that. Mr. Chester,
Would you please define ethnicity... and how you derived at African-American as an ethnicity... This is not a challenge.. it is an admitted ignorance on my part... Salaam.... Peace, Khalliqa My favorite subject. Each opportunity I get to explain my identity to others causes me to hone my understanding of my identity. My definition of ethnicity is essentially your personal group-identity which is unique to you and those other persons of common history, experience, and ancestry. In that defintion, the key words are 'common' and 'unique'. A. All persons in the group 'African American' are African ancestry, wholly or in part. How large or small that percentage is does not matter. B. All persons in the group are historically unable to identify where in Africa their ancestors originate. DNA technology has changed this capability somewhat, but if the person needs DNA to narrow the search, that person is a member of the group. C. The person is an American citizen either native-born, or naturalized. Some people, regardless of their group, may want to broaden or narrow the basis-of-reference to an entire continent, or to a specific tribe...or even clan. In the general reference of sociology, however, the basis is either ancestral nationality, or religion the most notable example of the latter being 'Jewish'. In that sociological generality, not only is African American (my) ethincity, but it is also my ancestral nationality. It was upon this basis I iniatiated my declaration of identity, and subsequently established my website to public declare and support it. As you might imagine, I can talk about my identity for days. This may be enough to let you know the basis of my statements. I ALWAYS willing to talk more. Just let me know. Brother Malcolm said "we are Africans who happen to be in America."
Simple and plain. That's good enough for me. Peace! ================ A race of people is like an individual man: until it uses it's own talent, takes pride in it's own history, expresses it's own culture, affirms it's own selfhood, it can never fulfill itself. El Hajj Malik Shabazz aka Malcolm X |

Simple and plain. That's good enough for me.---Dissident Personal choice is, first of all, for and about personal satisfaction. Personal choice is always valid. That choice, Malcom notwithstanding, is not enough for us as a people. That is if the goal, the point, here is identity. African, alone, cannot provide that for us...as a people. Identity is about uniqueness. There is unique in claiming an entire continent for identity. in my twenty five years of living i have never felt at home in america. i've never been called a nigger by a caucasian. but it has always been something in the way they looked at me, in their eyes, all of them. i struggled throughout my youth with my hair, my figure and anything else that would identify me. in stages i followed my path, the most recent stage being geneology and ancestry. i have stuggled so hard to find my home, my own people and kind. in all fairness the most distancing came from africans who consider themselves african american/ black. i now know why they did/said these things they've been taught to hate anything that points them home. i've said it b4 and again i am not black, a negro, a nigga or nigger, african american. I AM BANTU (Bamileke, Bamoun) with Arawak, and Carib descent.

I AM BANTU (Bamileke, Bamoun) with Arawak, and Carib descent.---1 of million STOLEN
It seems that your search is like that of millions. I recently heard a talk show host on 'The Power' on XM-radio. He said such discussion was about a subject that 'doesn't matter'. I was astonished. This was a Ph.D holder. So...as I said earlier...the search is, or should be..about identity. Identity is about a uniqueness. Bantu does bestow uniqueness. I don't know about Arawak. There is nothing unique about being 'Caribbean'. And you can be all of those things. Just a point. I wear many hats: Female, Mother, Grandmother, Great Aunt, Niece & Sister.
However mostly I wear my identity as an American of African Descent quite visibly and proudly. I can't say I'm Colored because all people have a color I can't say I am Black because black describes a color but does not tell who I am I can't say I am a Negro because the meaning is attached to racist sentiment. I can't say I am a Nigress because I've long since shed my slave mentality a long time ago. |

Without intended malice, Here ae some things I conside when applying identity...to me....suing your choice as an example. 'American of African Descent' American in the term indicates your citizenship. African Descent in the term indicates your continent of origin. American certainly is unique. It is specific to only those people who are citizens of the United States. African is likewise unique to every person who is (presumably) a citizen of a nation located on the African continent. With America being a nation of immigrants, and their descendants..., and excepting citizens and descendants of American Indian Nations...ethnicity...distinguishing identity is, typically, derived from ancestral nationality. Some ethnicity is extended to sub-nation groups...such tribes, or beyond even to clans...often used in Itrish and Scottish intra-ethnic differentiation. Africa, as a continent, does no offer a common culture...nor ethnicity. In my case, I use Africa and America. I use the two as a single term 'African American'. I also use American, additionally, to indicate my citizehship. I chose this combining of terms to for a single term which indicates the uniqueness of my citizenship AND my ethnicity. In the not to distant future, we will be force to adopt a single terminology to identify Americans who are of unknown African ancestry.
