Nothing on your list looks like it should give you problems. The protein could raise your blood sugar level depending on when you take it.

Let me poke around a bit and get back to you after you tell me whether it is type 1 or 2.

The doc never gave me that, all he said was "borderline" and wanted me to change my diet and lose a couple of lbs so I'm guessing type 2. I was taking tbomb 2 weeks ago and got sick and sure enough on the label in bold letters it said not for diabetics. I was taking 6 a day so I'm toying with the idea of cutting back (to 1 or 2) to see what happens. I guess I'm trying to find a good pre-workout supplement to give me back my strength and endurance.

I've tried contacting some of the companies and they are of little or no help with the standard line......

catch

Look at R-ALA or K-R-ALA. Also, try to consume more Low GI carbs. Consider buying one of the New Glucose Revolution books. Also consider Beta-Alanine (search for Giant Nutrition ProCarnosine). Also Avant Supercarb if you can find it!

I just read that potassium and calcium are good against hypertension. Are you aware of any of this? Do you agree?

Mineral balance in most cases = water balance in the body, so this makes sense to me. Eating foods rich in these minerals in certainly better than taking diuretics or beta blockers...

Supplements are just that - extra to boost workout performance/results. There is nothing wrong with a "natural" workout, whatever that is. In fact, I would never recommend supplements to someone before their nutrition & training is solid.

Two important questions. I'm about extend myself athletically for the first time in a couple of years. I'm in terrible cardio-vascular shape as well as muscular/physical condition etc.

1) Any supplements etc. that you think might be good for me to enhance "energy" and generally to help me make it through the game?

2) Anything good to take for over-all muscle soreness afterwards? I think I heard vitamin C was good for that. I'll just have an Advil IV drip going for about 3 days after playing! 14

How soon is your event? These two things may help quickly:

Sulbutiamine

This will help stave off fatigue, soreness, and should boost your alertness. I like 200mg twice a day when I really feel run down and just have to get something done.

BCAA + Glutamine + Citrulline Malate

Branch Chain Amino Acids promote recovery and muscle repair. Citrulline Malate boosts aerobic capacity and glutamine also assists with recovery. The link above points to a formula with all of these things.

This is how I would use these two things:

I would prepare a water bottle with 5-6 scoops of the BCAA mixture and 64oz of water.

45-60 minutes before the event, I would take the sulbutiamine on an empty stomach with 4-6 oz of water. Then 30 mins before the event, I would drink about 16 oz. of the BCAA mixture. Throughout the event, I would sip on this mixture in place of water/sports drink. Finish the remainder of this mix after the event if any is left.

High dose vitamin C (2-4 grams) will help with soreness as well.

No sir.

fro

You should use some of the BCAA mix (2-3 scoops in 24 oz. of water) a few days before and after your event. You should probably try the sulbutiamine at least once before your event (if you get it) so you know what to expect. It's actually useful even if you're well rested. Some folk will recommend it with caffiene. I like it better without.

I checked out the links. Are they also available at like a GNC store locally?

Is the 2nd link - Excell - exactly what you discussed?

Don't know what side of town you're on, but you can walk into any Vitamin Shoppe and buy Xtend which is just like the Excell. You should be able to buy a smaller size for about $25. BTW, the owner of the website with the Excell has a storefront & warehouse in Fayetteville. He also has sulbutiamine powder.

I decided not to do it. I haven't done ANYTHING athletic in a year and I was going to join an indoor lacrosse league. It wouldn't have been smart - I am poorly out of condition.

I'll try to get in shape to get back out and play this spring/summer.

I'm seriously thinking about starting to train to run a marathon though. I HATE running. I am a serious fast twitch guy. I've always been much quicker and faster than good with endurance. Therein lies a great challenge. I don['t want to drive 26 miles, much less run it, but I like that kind of challenge. I've been thinking about it forever, and I'm certainly not getting any younger, so I think I may go for it. bang

I'm trying to take as much protein in as my body weight. I'd like to do that with as few protein shakes as possible. In another thread you mentioned chicken... what's a good weeks worth of groceries for a meezly 200lb dude?

Do you have a warehouse club membership (Sam's, Costco, BJ's)?

Buy the bulk packs of chicken breast - you're looking at 30-35g per chicken breast

Buy the salmon - 20-25g per filet.

Tilapia - 25g per 2 filets

Ground beef (or turkey) at 90% lean or better - 20-25g per 4oz.

Like smoothies? Add 2 scoops of protein to some frozen fruit, low (or non) fat yogurt, water or milk - 50-60g right there.

Cottage cheese?

Whole Eggs or Egg Whites for omelets - 20g per 4 whole eggs; 20g per 3 oz of whites

Broccoli, green beans, carrots, cauliflower - fiber

Brown rice, oatmeal (whole oats), whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread, sweet potatoes/yams - complex carbs

Just a short list...

Have access to a gym?

Incline DB Press (30-45 degree bench angle)
Incline DB Flyes ( I have a link to ExRx.com in my blog - good site for exercise form)

Dips
That should do the trick...

No gym?

Pushups

Elevated Pushups - find a block or chair to elevate your feet.

Chair Dips - get two chairs, place one hand on each chair with your body in between the chairs and feet 1.5 - 2 feet beyond the front of the chairs. Allow your body to lower and push back up with your arms. Add a third chair to elevate your feet as you get stronger.
