SuperSize Me

One of the dumbest documentaries ever. Dishonest as well. Matt Spurlock decides he wants to see what would happen if he ate nothing but McDonald's for 30 days. What Spurlock doesn't tell you is that he is a recreational bodybuilder that stopped training during his documentary. Excess calories, no matter the source, will lead to fat gain & health issues. This is compounded by a sedentary lifestyle. DUH!!! Did Spurlock choose the healthier menu options offered? Of course not! Instead of villianizing the fast food industry, why not focus on why people choose to engage in sloth & gluttony. Guess that doesn't make people feel better about themselves. It also doesn't make money at the box office...

So, would he have gained the same amount of weight during that period if he had eaten healthy?

Would he have had the same deleterious health effects had he chosen a healthier food source?

Are you suggesting that fast food is somehow healthy?

If the caloric intake were the same - YES!!!
The health issues may not have occurred so quickly with healthier food sources; some healthy options are available at Mickey D's & other fast food restaurants.

If he were "eating healthy", is it likely that his caloric intake would have been the same?

Being a vegetarian, I haven't been to Mickey D's in quite some time... What "healthy" options do they have on the menu? (options that aren't loaded w/salt)

Possibly - Depends on fiber & veggie intake. I agree that many processed foods do not promote satiety, or a feeling of fullness. McD's has a number of salads that are healthy; the Grilled Chicken sandwich is a good choice as well. Sodium is not the enemy - it simply needs to be balanced with adequate water intake.

I admit that I am a bit biased, but meat in a salad seems to defeat the purpose of the salad...

Isn't sodium the #1 cause of high blood pressure in the Black community? I have not seen any McD's commercials that promote water intake, so how is the average person supposed to know about it?

Hard to say - people eat for a variety of reasons outside of sustenance. For sedentary people, eating solely for sustenance, you may correct. The rules change for athletes & physically active adults.

Interesting thought. Restaurants are in the business of providing food. Are you suggesting that restaurants supercede the role health care professionals should play in our lives?

I am being serious... Salads generally are used to get "roughage" and to clean the colon... Meat does the opposite

I am saying that the vast majority of fast food is not good for you and a relatively few members of the medical profession speak out about it... After all, if people didn't get sick, doctors would not have much to do...

But hasn't their addition of healthy food items been precisely due to criticism generated by films like Supersize Me?

ddouble I think you're correct... but you'd have to drink a helluva lot of water, for example, to balance the sodium ingested on a fast food diet...

Many people simply do not have the dietary knowledge/discipline that you seem to have...

Many people who subsist on fast food do so because of sloth (not wanting to cook for example) or lack of time (due to extremely busy schedules)... these people aren't likely to be gym regulars anyway... So, given these facts, is Supersize Me really that dishonest?

I mean isn't it a more or less realistic portrayal of what's likely to happen to the type of person who subsists on a fast food diet?

I think Spurlock unfairly targets one aspect of the issue. The larger issue in my opinion is the "couch potato syndrome" most Americans suffer from. Granted, diets were likely healthier as a whole before the prevalence of processed & fast foods, but the average physical activity level was much higher as well. Regular exercise does a number of wonderful things reducing the impact of less healthy food choices.

Lack of time (or sloth) is a bs reason to rely on fast food alone. It takes about two hours to prep & prepare a week's worth of food. Grilled chicken (or beef or pork), brown rice, steamed veggies, browned ground beef (or turkey) and you're set. Throw it in Glad containers and you just grab & go.

Spoken like a bodybuilder Wink. But most people do not have the discipline to eat such a diet. You are eating to fuel your workouts and to build muscle. Taste is probably down on the list for you. When I started powerlifting, back in the day, there was no fancy whey protein or MRPs. Have you ever had a tuna shake. They tasted horrible, but it was quick, cheap, and a good source of protein. It was also kind of a macho thing. Most people would not touch the stuff, and most people are not going to do broiled chicken breast, steamed veggies, and brown rice everyday of the week.

I have had a tuna shake before. Smile And you're right, taste is not always priority one with me. I should have known a powerlifter would call me out on that! laugh

D?

Could not the reverse be true as well?

I am living testament to one who eats right and works out little......

but am healthier and look younger than most women my age..... and I've had three children to boot....

I know that may sound vain....

I'm sorry.... but I was just trying to make a point.....

I am vegetarian...... and this alone..... healthy diet....... seems to be a greater factor in my body's health......

though I'm not knocking exercise...

but I have little to work off or purge because I eat right....

Virtue-

IMO, maintaining health requires a multi-faced approach. Equal attention to nutrition, exercise, mental well-being, and preventive health care is key. Any time one (or more) of these aspects is neglected, rigid disclipline must be applied to the remaining factors. Genetics can also make up for neglect in these areas, to a point.

Gift giving in the workplace...

You know the drill - wedding shower, baby shower, maybe a birthday or promotion. Sooner or later, you will be asked to contribute to a gift in the workplace.

Who should receive the largest gift contributions, an admin/entry-level associate, the manager or the manager of managers?

Who needs the gifts more? Recently, we were forcefully asked to participate in a number of activities & gift giving for someone who makes 2-3 times the average associate salary. There is no similiar outpouring of generosity for average Joe/Jane. Even if you consider it an office political game, there is no way to show you gave more than anyone else, so there is no advantage to be gained.

What did I do? Brought a nice card with nothing in it but my signature...

D,

I still think he made some valid points about nutrition in this country. Most people are not as disiplined as you are or pay attention to the "quality" of food they eat. I also don't think a person who increase there calories and didn't work out but ate healthy foods would have developed the other symptoms - depression, which was reduced when they ate, vomiting, heart issue

I think the real reason for his health issues wan't so much the food but the drink - SODA! Processed sugar. Rember the guy who ate big macs everyday but his cholesteral was normal. But the obese guy going in to have his stomach stapled drank a couple of liters of soda almost daily.

With the first pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Houston Texans take.... Mario Williams?

17

Is somebody in that front office smoking crack? Taking oxycotin? Having too many cohibas & martinis?

Reggie Bush dominated college football for the last three seasons. Need a clutch kick return, run from scrimmage, pass reception, block, or gadget play? For all of these, you could call on number 5 of USC. Remember, he split time with a 1000 yard rusher and still had 2000+ all purpose yards for years.

You give potentially the new millenium Marshall Faulk away for who? A guy that only turned it on for half of one season? Mario Williams will be a nice addition to the Texans defensive front, but he is not a franchise changer.

Is it because of the recent allegations of Bush's parents receiving free housing? What does that have to do with his on field talent? I think this blunder will set the Texans back at least 3 more seasons... and that's just what they deserve!
