Eight Time Ms. Olympia Lenda Murray

quote:
While the "average" female has 25 percent body fat, Murray's body fat ranges from 12 (her norm) to a mere 8 percent (when in competition). That makes Murray a lean, mean, muscle machine. Society tends to view pumped-up women as freaks. But Murray can take the heat. "Because of that [the bodybuilding stigma], I am much stronger mentally than ever before."

Just today at lunch, my wife said, I think you should take back up your powerlifting and strongman. I had been watching the WSM yesterday and had been thinking the same thing. I have just been doing cardio for sense I have been working on my qualifying exams and dissertation proposal, but come April when that is over, I am going to start building those calluses again.

My brother was a competitive bodybuilder for many years (he stills weight-trains regularly). I was his workout partner for those years. Before then, I played baseball, basketball, and ran track. Weight training was the thing that I knew I would stay with beyond my youth. I'm nowhere near where you and other real buffed guys are (not "buff", which is the watered-down term people use for anyone who's fit; I mean "buffed", which is how they said it back in the day when it was purely a bodybuilding term), but weight training gave this formerly skinny kid a huge confidence boost, and it continues to help me feel great about myself, along with keeping this 44-year-old in good health. You can see pictures of me if you click on the link to my website below. A lot of guys say they wouldn't want to be built like a hard-core bodybuilder, but the fact is they could never stand up to the kind of workouts required to be built like that; I know from seeing it first-hand, not to mention the diet, supplements, etc. There's not a man out there who wouldn't want to look like Ronnie Coleman for a day!

I have questions for you, that are very knowledgeable about weight lifting. I have heard that there is big difference between free-weights and resistance gyms, such as the "Bow-Flex". What is your opinion? Have you tried them? Is 300lbs on a resistance gym the same as 300lbs of free-weights? What is the difference, in your opinion?

I own a resistance gym and exorcise regularly. I also own a treadmill and a Wing Tsun (Chung) Kung Fu dummy, among many other pieces of equipment. Although I can lift 300lbs 10 times, I never bulk up because I maintain the dietary law of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I am the same weight as I was at 16 years old (140 lbs), though I am twice that in age. My personal view on physique, is that nothing is wasted. I personally want to be able to exorcise when I am very old, and I practice techniques now, which I have refined for 27 years.

I am interested to know your views on this.

Thank you for your knowledge and understanding.

The raw poundage is the same - the effective poundage is lower on the resistance bands. The pulleys & cables add some efficiency to the movement, making it easier. Free weights can move through space along a unique path each rep. The resistance bands cannot fully replicate this, so the neuro-muscular response isn't as strong. The Bowflex is useful, but it is a different experience than free weights.

I hope this helps. If not, keep asking. fro
