I think it's a combination of needing to adjust it, making sure it's hanging on the correct side, and I dunno, maybe it feels good or something.

I remember having a conversation about this in eighth grade with a guy who always held himself. All of us girls just thought he was nasty and had found a way to get his personal feel on in public, although he was always in trouble about it. Well one day we were in class and I asked him why he was always grabbing at his crotch. His response was followed and interrupted many times by the various boys around us. From what I can recall the main reason they did it was to "reposition their stuff" and to get attention from girls. One of my friends said, "Yeah, you guys get attention all right, that's why none of us want anything to do with you." I also remember an ex boyfriend appearing to hold his stuff all the time when he walked as well, but it was mostly done to keep his pants up and apparently it was the front-waist of the jeans that he was holding. Why he never tightened the belt he had on or wore clothes that fit, I will never understand ~~Dream big...because any other way is a waste of time!!~~ |

Hmmm ... you know, Ms. Tru ...
I can definitely understand the "repositioning" thing! I suppose that a *hanging* appendage such as that doesn't always situate itself in the proper place all the time! I can see that as an occasional "shift" from time to time ... but hanging on for dear life .. is a whole 'nother thing, if you ask me! BLACK by NATURE, PROUD by CHOICE. There should never be a need to reposition anything if you wear the proper underwear, though of all the reasons it's the most sensible one.

I don't think anyone has yet suggested that folks do it because everyone else is doing it.
It's something of a sub-cultural norm. |

Really??
This is good. But I got a question: Under this reasoning, would you surmise that it could be a relatively sub-conscious thing, then? Or that it is more consciously done ... as in sort of in a manly/macho kinda way?

This thread has me cracking up... and OBB's post about superstition was fascinating...

It could be. From the end of Reconstruction to the middle to late 20th century, the Klan did cut them off when they lynched black men and either stuck them in the victim's mouth as they choked to death from both the obstruction and the noose, or they put them in a jar as a souvenir. It's possible it's held or checked as a sub-conscious thing. "There are two things that are infinite, human stupidity and the universe...and I'm not too sure about the universe." --Albert Einstein |

Also ...
Are we (women) supposed to or not supposed to look when y'all are holding your *manhood*? I know that women don't like having certain parts of their anatomy gawked at as if they were some kind of neon signs. So ... is it okay/embarrassing/preferrable/neither here nor there if we look at your crotch area when you are holding it?? Are we supposed to pretend that we don't notice? 'Cause, I will look! I'll just tell you that right now! BLACK by NATURE, PROUD by CHOICE. Before there was ANY history, there was BLACK history. |

I could do something very vindictive right now that goes perfectly with this thread... but I won't... Someone is very lucky that I am not that evil...

Santana, your avatar, was that taken in Chicago? It looks so familiar, like in the low end, before it was too low, back inna 40s. Both in time and place. Like about 45th and King Drive, but at that time it was South Park Ave or it might have even been Grand Bvld back then. Damn, looking at that pic, it is like I am waiting for the bus to come. I am thinking Easter Sunday, 1951 in front of Mt Pisgah Baptist Church. It looks so Chicago.
