Who are the top 10 men who inspire you in some way?

How are they inspirational?

Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.
If you miss me at the back of the bus
You can't find me nowhere
Come on over to the front of the bus
I'll be riding up there

1. Gordon Parks.

For obvious reasons. He was a photographer. Highly productive and creative. Inspite of all the odds against him (born in 1912 to a poor black family with 14 kids) he lived out his full creative potential.

2. I won't name him since he's not famous. But he was one of my best friends before he died a year ago. He was an older brotha, a former mentor, who lived a life of great integrity. He was among the wisest men I've ever known. Patient. Understanding. Insightful.

I try to be like him.

I'll have to think some more about others.

I'M AN ELITIST TOO.

    yeah

I like to also add some honorable mentions:

Oscar Mischaux--black film director pioneer of the '20s. Before Spike Lee, John Singleton and Robert Townsend, he started it all.

    M. Night Shyamalan--I had to borrow from Sarecen's list.

    Tavis Smiley--great journalist

My Dad! - brilliant. loving. never critical. always accepting. a deep thinker. a musician. above all else - just a great dad!

My maternal grandfather - extremely loving. an awe inspiring leader. a committed activist and educator.

My paternal grandfather - just very solid as a man. a PhD in agriculture who taught at an HBCU his whole career and never lost his thirst and curiosity for knowledge.

My maternal great grandfather - a mover and shaker: a lawyer (graduated from Lincoln in the late 1800's), businessman - owned property, was on the board of directors of a black-owned rail road, founded a church, was a publisher of a black newspaper, was a state representative, etc.

My maternal great great grandfather - extraordinary vision, the tenacity to both dream wild dreams for himself (i.e. freedom) and the ability to make those dreams come true. among other things, humbly, he is the founder of American public education (he wrote the legislation for the first free and public schools in the country).

Nelson Mandela - i love the notion that he kept his "backbone stiff" for 26 years in the hold of a prison before coming out and leading SA.

Paul Robeson - he did it all: great education. great athletic distinction. great musical talent. i also certainly appreciate the strength of his character and political beliefs.

Joseph Cinque - for taking matters into his own hands and not accepting what appeared to be his fate.

    Denmark Vesey - ditto

Colin Powell - for playing the game but not completely losing his soul. i will always give him big kudos for discussing his support of affirmative action at the rnc convention and, frankly, for resigning from the bush admin.
