I am not sure what you mean by this question (or are there two questions.) Perhaps if you defined what you mean by independent. I know a number of successful professional women who are happily married.

Radio what do you mean by independent married women? I hope you know you can not be married and be independent. You are independent when you are single. You give up your independence when you marry. The same applies to both the man and the woman. Tell me do you know any independent married man? Show me such a man and I would show you an unhappy miserable wife. The same logic applies in vice-versa, show me an independent married woman and I would show you a thoroughly miserable husband. For a successful marriage the couple works best as one unit not independent of each other.

There are, and my wife is one of them, unless you define the word "independent" so narrowly so as to exclude married women (and men) by definition.

Certainly, anybody gives up some independence, as well as some freedom, by marrying, in most cases. But I suspect that somebody who is very independent while single will remain more or less independent after marriage.
Of course, once again, one could always define the word by fiat in such a way so as to make it impossible for a married person to be independent.

this was a topic my friends and I were having last weekend. I seemed like 'independence' has no place in a marriage. Marriage is a 'we' focus construct, not a 'me' focused deal.

I hope that does not put you off marriage. Meeting and marrying the right person can be a wonderful experience so much so that if it comes to a choice of independence and marriage I would choose marriage anytime.

i agree, my parents have been married for over 40 years, but times have changed. As I think of marriage, I often ponder to who and what the future may hold. it's hard finding a 'marriageable' 'lady' that can grow with a man in all the aspects necessary, i.e. spiritual, culturally, financially, etc. I guess I have earned the right be picky and will choose very wisely.
