Peace...
I used to visit the Barbershop twice a week. I would have my hair faded every 4 days... Now I cut my own hair..Barbers charge as much as $20.00 per visit, and well I am not willing to pay $40.00 (plus tips) per week to have my hair cut.. Do you cut yourself, or let the stylist/barber take care of you? Kai "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade. |

I stopped going to a barber 10 years before I locked my hair. In this day and age, I did not want to be cut by dirty clippers. I've seen brothes with follicular mucinosis - especially on the back of their necks - and I did not want that to happen to me.
Black Child's Pledge I pledge allegiance to my Black People. I pledge to develop my mind and body to the greatest extent possible. I will learn all that I can in order to give my best to my People in their struggle for liberation. I will keep myself physically fit, building a strong body free from drugs and other substances which weaken me and make me less capable of protecting myself, my family and my Black brothers and sisters. I will unselfishly share my knowledge and understanding with them in order to bring about change more quickly. I will discipline myself to direct my energies thoughtfully and constructively rather than wasting them in idle hatred. I will train myself never to hurt or allow others to harm my Black brothers and sisters for I recognize that we need every Black Man, Woman, and Child to be physically, mentally and psychologically strong. These principles I pledge to practice daily and to teach them to others in order to unite my People. The Black Panther, October 26, 1968 by Shirley Williams |

I go the barber about every two weeks (fade); however I have my own clippers and will tighten myself up between visits if I feel the need to.
...but sometimes I feel like I go as much for the camaraderie as much as anything else. Nothing like a good "debate" in the barbershop. |

I cut my own hair mainly. I usually just cut my hair very short or just shave it all off. Now in the winter time, I'll visit a barber to get faded up and keep some hair on my head but that might happen 2 times at the most.

My wife generally cuts my hair. (What's left of it, anyway)
A couple of weeks ago she started massaging some Colombian concoction that I call "hair dressing" (because mayonaze seems to me a major ingredient of her secret recipe) into my hair. It's supposed to make my hair grow back. I'll keep everybody posted on the results... Should know by Christmas or at least by next summer...

When I was in college I went to barbers... then I got a friend of mine to cut it - then he graduated... back to the barbers... they could never cut quite the way it looked in "the picture"... so I went out and bought some clippers... I couldn't cut "like the picture" either, but at least I didn't have to pay someone to mess it up... now I shave my head... and it looks just like the picture...

The tragic irony here is that a lot of African Americans may not fully recognize the implications of this decision for years to come. I go to the barber about every 10 days. It's one of the few times I have to my thoughts and myself. Plus, living in Tucson, it's one of the few places that I can count on seeing folks that share my skin tone and conversational style.

I am definitely not skilled enough to do it myself. I usually go twice a month. |

Rock the baldy courtesy my clippers and/or razor. Getting pretty good at maintaining the facial hair too!
