When I first learned Hung Gar, my sifu (teacher)said something that stuck with me ever since..

"Let the moment happen. Don't fight the storm, but embrace it. Ride it's waves to your destination. Whatever destiny has set, will happen. You can not affect the final outcome but you can affect the journey to that outcome."

It's deep with many meanings on many levels, but I have to admit...following this advice has saved me alot of times. Men today need to start following more wisdom from the past. Maybe then our present and future won't appear so bleak. Just my opinion. Take it for what you will. Ciao....

Was your Sifu a Taoist?

I apologize BV, I'm BBQ'in and I'm running in and out of the house.

We never discussed religion but I have always believed he was either a Taoist or possibly followed Confusiousism (sp). My instructor in Ia-do when I was stationed in Japan was a devout Taoist however.

Ah another iaido pratictioner. Sword in sheath. Very cool.

One stating to learn the lessons taught (read lumps) to you by life to achieve a greater wisdom while moving toward your destiny.

The other part seems like your perception affects how you grow. Same lumps, but perception of those lumps can equal positive growth or negative growth.

Just how i see it.

My kwanjang's words of wisdom was always that I have to rearn to lelax once I entered his school. espec the frag and authority.

He always mixed English and Korean together and so I assumed those were just words that he'd get along to translating for me some time later.

I didn't quite rearn. sck

If you miss me at the back of the bus
You can't find me nowhere
Come on over to the front of the bus
I'll be riding up there

I guess i needed to add a bit more.

My Sensei ( who was a shinto priest for a time ) trained me as a deshi which i had to earn. I did meet his sensei as well from Japan.

One word of wisdom that i learned very quickly was..."If you get hit, it is because you did not move fast enough."

Basic? YES
Effective in teaching? Hell YES LOL.

To be like water, is very true. He also told me to learn to, "Take the path of least resistance", which in my art or any art is very necessary. It can apply in life as well.

Peace...

My instructor teaches that a good student is hit often, and occasionally hurt.
