You have a company bank account is used to receive donations as well as payments, and also serves for general transactions.

You notice the most recent statement shows a balance that is several thousand dollars more than anticipated.

The unexpected excess persists over several months even with your questioning the accuracy of the balance each month.

Each monthly questioning is answered with a firm statement that 'the balance is correct'.

What do you do?

Set aside the amount you believe to be in excess in a CD or other interest bearing account and wait. I'm sure there is a statute of limitations on bank errors - If the error is eventually acknowledged by the bank, you have the money on hand to return. If not, when the statute is up, you have additional funds to use.

I would set the extra aside as DD suggested but I would also check the books to see if any bills were missed or not paid. I also would consider having a pair of independent expert eyes take a look at the account's transactions.

I like all of the answers. Thanks.

And by the way, What accountant?

I also would consider having a pair of independent expert eyes take a look at the account's transactions.---folobatuyi

I was hoping the 'expert' eyes would be the bank having three tries.

After 3-1/2 months I withdrew the excess, and deposited it in another bank.

In the sixth month, the bank called to see if I had discovered what they thought might 'missplaced' funds.

I say, 'No, all the money in my accountants had reason to be there.'

They thought I should check further.

I didn't.

Needless to say, the bank closed that account.

It was empty anyway.
