Michael Jackson-Remember The Time
Egungun, Egungun ni t'aiye ati jo! Ancestos, Ancestors come to earth and dance! "I'm sick of the war and the civilization that created it. Let's look to our dreams, and the magical; to the creations of the so-called primitive peoples for new inspirations." - Jaques Vache and Andre Breton "Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone." -John Maynard "You know that in our country there were even matriarchal societies where women were the most important element. On the Bijagos islands they had queens. They were not queens because they were the daughters of kings. They had queens succeeding queens. The religious leaders were women too..." -- Amilcar Cabral, Return to the Source, 1973 |

Do your thing, Momzed!
If you knew the kind of stuff I listened to, you'd see that I'd have a lot of nerve to chastize someone else's musical tastes. *********************************** “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.†-- James Baldwin |

When I was driving earlier today a radio show was playing some songs from and commenting on her famous Carnegie Hall concert, and I remembered I have that CD. She is not even on my top list of favorite singers, but I love the passion with which she belted out those songs on that concert recording. I put it on when I got home, and...she is so good!

so what if I can't speak Portugese (yet) this is beautiful.... Marcus Valle 'Online' 12" version... let that Brasillian musical sunshine flow across you.... recommended in traffic jams or wide open roads... gasp....
And if you want the baseline in stripped back pared down sound... well, it's hard to go past Edison X and 'Rainha Do Mar' - how chilled can ya get...

You know, I listen to EVERYTHING!...and I mean everything! I just love music...and learned to appreciate all forms of it early on. Then, when you think about all of the different ways so many songs have been done and re-done??? Amazing... Right now, one of my favorite CD's is Brandon Heath's Don't Get Comfortable, with songs I'm Not Who I Was, Let's Make It Last (This is a SWEET Song!), and Red Sky. By far my favorite is Jazz...and I love music of the world... So much to listen to; so little time! "Wisdom Is A Woman Who Appreciates Good Tunes!" "Don't talk about it: BE ABOUT IT!" "To BE One, ASK ONE!" -OES |

I clicked on the first link, ShayaButHer, and that song was nice. I've never heard of Heath. The name sounds like it belongs to a country singer. I don't really get down with country music, but my musical taste is always evolving. I mean, I actually like a little blue grass. I mentioned the Carolina Chocolate Drops somewhere upthread. As for jazz, I guess I'm just not that sophisticated. I've got some Ramsey Lewis, Wes Montgomery, Nina Simone, Ella, Billie, etc. in my music collection, but I can't wrap my brain around the more innovative styles of jazz. I have a friend who's into Miles, Coltrane, Monk and them. So, I figured she might appreciate something different, and I burned her a world music CD. She wasn't feeling it. *********************************** “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.†-- James Baldwin |

You know, I didn't get into country music, in fact I DESPISED country music, until several years ago...my son INSISTED upon watching the CMA awards! I was like, "WHAT???? You want to watch WHAT???" I specifically said, "Listen hun, ummmm....YOU can watch it, but Ms Savvy Thang don't get down with the twang...see ya, bye!" ...and he held up his lil finger and said, "Uh, uh, uh...wait a minute mom! What happened to the open mindedness you taught me??? We WILL be watching it!" LOL...my slick kid! Who would have "thunk it"...MY kid wanted to watch country music...the sin of all sins...LMAO! ...so we sat down to watch the country music awards, or rather HE sat down and I squirmed...LOL. ...and I actually LIKED a LOT of the music being performed! Some songs that had me CRACKIN up were one by this woman who talked about burying her dude! It had something to do with being a crazy rednecked woman and being proud of that! LOL... LAST year, we saw one by a teen girl, in which the lyrics say something about doing something with her boyfriend that "yer mama don't know"...LOL.... I think it is called "Our Song?" All I know is that every time I hear it, I LAUGH, Laugh, Laugh! I liked watching US perform country music...I know we have a history of it, but it was good to see us in that form. I also like how various music mixed at the CMA's...and how country has CHANGED up from the traditional twang. MoreOver, I like the bluegrass, too...we have some lil dive places in the MidWest where you can go and hear some really good performers. Love and sing Vaugh, Holiday, Simone, Fitzgerald, etc... Classics, Jazz Greats, World Music, Rock, etc....love it all. Another great reason to love the MidWest: besides the low home prices, great food, easy lifestyle, you have access to all SORTS of art and artists...and its easy distance to any part of the U.S...so you can always get what you are missing. Oh, Wait! Porgy and Bess...LOVE the music to that! Anybody here been exposed to that? "Wisdom Is A Diverse Woman!" "Don't talk about it: BE ABOUT IT!" "To BE One, ASK ONE!" -OES |

I was looking for the music from "Porgy and Bess" not too long ago. I ended up purchasing more William Grant Still i.e. "Still/Dawson/Ellington: Symphony No. 2/Negro Folk Symphony/Harlem." I would love to own Quincy Jones's "Roots" soundtrack. I use to own it when the miniseries came out. That joint is hard to find now, though.
