Star Jones files for divorce
Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:56pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Star Jones, whose elaborate, corporate-sponsored wedding won her the nickname "Bridezilla," has filed for a divorce from her husband of about three years, Al Reynolds, according to media reports.

Celebrity television show "Entertainment Tonight" said Jones issued a statement saying she had filed the papers a month ago.

"The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone's life that requires privacy with one's thoughts," Jones said in the statement. "I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman."

Jones, 46, and Reynolds, 39, a banker, were married in 2004 in a lavish wedding in which supplies and services were donated by corporate "sponsors" in return for publicity. Tabloid newspapers referred to her as "Bridezilla."

Jones was a co-host the popular daytime talk show "The View," on which a group of women discuss current affairs, for nearly 10 years before being dropped in 2006. In an interview on NBC's "Today" show after the firing she apologized for getting "caught in the euphoria" of her plans.

"I think I used and some would say abused, my celebrity in planning the wedding," she said on "Today." In Wednesday's statement to "Entertainment Tonight," Jones said she "made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life."

The divorce papers were filed in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan. A spokesman for Jones had no further comment.

Didn't Star learn anything from Terri McMillan? Roll Eyes Star's husband was on the DL, wasn't/isn't he?

I don't think that it was ever really that DL. But what is this that I saw of Star and Dwayne Wade. First, isn't he young enough to be her sone, and second, I heard it was to make Al jealous. The only way I could see Al being jealous is of wanting to be Star in this situation, not of wanting to get Star back. Eek

OA, I think the one woman on earth who has the WORST gay-dar in the world is Liza Minnelli. She's Judy Garland's daughter, worshipped by the Gay community, a Broadway legend just like her mother.

How in the world ALL your ex-husbands end up gay? Liza should have GPS gay-dar. Terri McMillan and Star Jones should've learned from Liza. I'm a dude. Our gay-dar isn't nearly as sharp as a woman's, and even I knew that Star's and Terri's exes were on the DL. When I saw her picture with her then-husband, my friends knew that he looked peculiar. One of my roommates said, "Doesn't he look like Sinbad's gay twin?" when he saw the picture of them together.

HOT COUPLE my ass. That's a hot mess. That is the most well dressed visual of hot mess I've ever seen in my life. A grown-ass man dressed like he was going to his kindergarten graduation. You know what so sad, if the suit was all black, it looked like Star was ready to take him to the Greyhound bus station and send him to Farrakhan Day Camp. lol

fro Okay! Brain Break. I know I've been missin' in action lately. But! Eek The DL radar was extremely obvious from day one with this brotha. It's sad how women [especially SOME black women] will settle for any "THANG" just to have a *%#$*! These women on the outside are viewed as tough, intelligent... no nonsense got-it-going on Black divas....but in real life on the inside they are REALLY insecure with severe low self-esteem issues and will go to ANY means NOT to be ALONE....cuz they want it both ways. Some women think cuz they have a big MOUTH...and can talk that shyte...they are excluded from being MADE into a fool. As I always say....the LOUDEST person in the room....is the WEAKEST link-with no true power. This bad-ass tough Black woman image is an unrealistic persona many Black women are buying into...with devestating consequences. Star just like Terry bought into this whole I gotta have a man to be defined as a WOMAN crap...and look what happened. They have been humiliated in PUBLIC...they have MADE fools of themselves constantly....and Terry let her husband come BACK in her BED knowing what he is.....and soon when all the hype goes away....quietly Star is gonna do the same. How sad! fro

That is an interesting point, about the tough black woman image, Koco...

I have been convinced that both Terri McMillan and Star Jones knew they were marrying gay guys. Liza Minelli as well. I believe that in the pursuit of their "strong, dominant, tough woman image," they sought to marry men they found effeminate. In an interview a couple of years back, Terri McMillan said something about money she had given her ex-husband, "So he could start his dog-grooming business ..." So I don't want to hear her claim she didn't know he was gay. I realize that's stereotyping to an extent, but when you look at things like that in the total context of everything else about the guy, I'm not listening to these women claim they didn't know. They knew; somehow, something else went wrong in the relationship.

Same thing with Star Jones. If she was desperate for a man, she easily could have picked a straight guy. Even when she was fat, she could have found a straight guy to marry. Desperation for a man doesn't explain this alone. She intentionally married a gay guy. Either she wanted a man she felt she could be "stronger" and "tougher" than, or she wanted a man who wouldn't end up with another woman. Either way, there's clearly some insecurity there.

In fact, after she dropped all the weight, maybe she dropped some of the insecurity too. Enough to decide that the reasons for marrying a gay guy no longer applied... 19

That's a very interesting perspective, Vox. I can definitely see that being the case. 19

I also believe that it wasn't a *secret* to either one of these women that their soon-to-be husbands had a little sugar in their boots. Remember, Star's husband was photographed in a gay bar on Halloween with a cape and a G-string, flashing folks and calling himself "Bam-Bam"!! Eek

But, I think one thing both of these relationships had in common was that both of these men more or less swept these women off of their feet with love and charm and made them feel very, very special!! That's a hook-line-and-sinker way for a man (gay or otherwise) to reel in a woman (especially one with a lot of money) ... and a lot of women will overlook crazy, outlandish things to have a man giving her that kind of love in her life.

And of course, there's always the "I can change him" (flawed) way of thinking .. that never works, but doesn't stop us from trying! Smile

fro Great Observation Brotha Vox....but let's not forget CONTROL. These women have to be in CONTROL! And is why they select those type of guys.[who don't mind being told what to do cuz the goal is to get that almight dollarBig Grin] And as we all know....a diva can't be TOLD what to do. She needs someone to hold her "puppy." For men, this term is called "eye candy." It works the same for women. Looking at the substance on the outside, instead of what's really going on...on the inside. And this is what leads to the DESPERATION. Cuz a diva "gots to have a man" Eek Otherwise, her image, persona, power will not be taken seriously. How can you listen to a powerful "person" if they don't have a "significant" other to validate their "supposedly" greatness? "You're all that and don't have a man? Somethings wrong." This happens in the world of women....this is their/our thinking...how we process our definition of being "woman." which was part of the brainwashing of what a woman's role is with a man. Even Juanita is a culpit/and guilty of this ridiculous sterotype. But women like this have to be in the center of attention....their voice have to be heard and respected by those who do not KNOW who they really are. Cuz if folks knew who they really are inside....the respect wouldn't be there. A good example of this is a young child wanting attention....he/she acts out until he/she gets it...but it's fake. Not real. Cuz once attention is given...it has to be kept...otherwise the low-esteem issues emerges and the person acts out again...which I personally find this behavior to be grossly immature and CHILDISH. Still, many women have NOT outgrown this. It's been inbedded....it's been taught...passed by down generationally for whateva reason...and the bottom line is this: for many insecure women...to get a man is viewed as being "worthy" or if you will, being of worth...which is the case for these ladies..including Liza. BTW: even if a woman drops the weigh...she doesn't drop the insecurities altogether...just like weight insecurities/low self esteem returns often and is much harder to lose than the pounds cuz it's all psychological.fro
