Italian Vogue devotes July issue exclusively to black women by Jennifer Romolini, Shine staff, 20 hours ago

Last week rumors were swirling in the fashion world that—in protest of the serious lack of diversity on catwalks, ads and in women's magazines—Vogue Italia was working on a special issue that would feature almost exclusively black models (like Iman, left, and also lots of less-known faces). Then, Sunday, the news was confirmed by Vogue Italia's editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani who said rather simply, "[We're doing this] because nobody is using black girls."

This is actually a cool, monumental event. For decades, magazines the world over have been white, white, white. They've featured black models sparingly—usually, notoriously on January covers, the slowest month of the year. Casting agents have been instructed not to "send ethnics" and the common (let's face it, racist) mentality has been: black models don't sell covers and they don't inspire women to spend.

Will this Vogue Italia cover change anything? Who knows? But it's an excellent start.

The question is will the American "Vogue" do it here?

Maybe their competition will. Then again, you'll have the neocons on talk radio saying "Why they did that? You don't see them doing a special issue about white women?" Whiny racist ass, Sean Hannity.
