When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak Audre Lord |

I can't believe I'm saying this (it sounds like something some White conservative would say), but why would a Black person compare the experiences of our ancestors to the experiences that Mexican immigrants go through? Mexican immigrants are experiencing poverty NOW. Our ancestors were slaves more than 130 years ago. When is the last time any of us here on this messsage board were personally whipped or bonded in iron chains? It looks bad if the only thing you can bring up is the past suffering (that you yourself have not experienced) in comparison to the present suffering of other people. And I agree 100% with MBM, is the suffering of other people only important if they have suffered to the same degree as our ancestors? How are we today suffering to the same degree as our own ancestors? Blaming the problem on "illegal" Mexicans reminds me of how middle-class Germans blamed Jews in Germany for the economic depression before WWII. MBM, the reason a lot of members are so hesistant to blame the corporations is because deep down they either feel there is little they can about the corporations, or possibly they still admire corporations because they aspire to be a white-collar employee or manager of one somday. It's always easier to beat up on the weaker party instead of going after evil in high places. This may be a bit biased, but I feel it's a good article on why many everyday Black people would rather attack immigrants than the employers that hire them (because they still rely on those employers to hire Black people): http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?...569fa2247fb&from=rss I also can't believe I'm saying this, but I feel no sympathy for Black people who give the government and employers a free pass yet get all animated about Mexican immigrants (even to the point of dropping epithets like "amigo" and "chico"). Anyone who focuses on victims while not going after the victimizer deserves whatever bad happens to them. This is painful, but Black people who end up without a job and refuse to do anything else about it other than begging Massa to close the borders and re-hire them doesn't have my sympathy or solidarity. The same goes for these damn Hispanic people voting Republican and filling in "White" in the race area on the census and blaming Black folks for their problems instead of going after these corporations and the government. They don't have my support or solidarity. As for the "Amexica" comment, keep in mind that prior to the mid-1800's, most of the American Southwest belonged to the Mexicans. The land that you now believe is Massa's (the US government's) right to keep and call the Mexicans returning to their homeland against Massa's wishes "illegal immigrants". ---------------------------------- "Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. I agree with MBM, SisterSouljah and Isome. I know that many will probably call me an "illegal immigrant-hugging sellout", so be it. If "Black Empowerment" has come down to marching with the Minutemen, holding up African slavery and our involuntary immigration here as justification for a black-faced form of right-wing Nativism/anti-foreignism and supporting a police state to close the border then fuck Black Empowerment.
I come from the old school of Black Empowerment that believed, like Malcolm X, in Black people uniting with other people of color. But apparently I missed the boat because Black empowerment today means Nativism, an anti-Mexican police state and dumping on Brown immigrants instead of the White employers. All in the hopes that it will magically make Massa...er..the employer start magically hiring Black people again at higher wages. Lord Almighty, I never thought I'd live to see the day when working Black people start mimicking Fascist ideas (racial nationalism, anti-foreign sentiments, police state national border measures scapegoating elements of the working class and underclass for economic problems, HeruStar supporting class-based eugenics laws). We've gone from being a people in support of radical internationalism, anti-racism, working-class solidarity, cooperativism and anti-government sentiments (the Civil Rights era) to mimicking Bill O'Reilly and the Minutemen (even down to the condescending racial stereotypes of Mexicans). We really must be near the End of Days. ---------------------------------- "Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital.
