You know you like it!
I once went to the grocery store and picked up a watermelon in produce. I carried it under one arm because I only wanted one other item. The store was having a promotion that day. In all the aisles, there were a few spots that were specially marked and numbered ... and every now and again when a customer was standing near one of those spots it would be announced over the intercom that the customer in aisle 6 would get something free. There I was, wandering in an aisle, with a big watermelon under my arm, standing in the right spot at the right time. Wouldn't you know it ... but I got a free bucket of fried chicken! I took it ... and ran. Watermelon ... Let's talk about it. |

I'm not gonna front. I love watermelon! It's my favorite summertime fruit, actually, it's my favorite fruit. However, I CAN NOT eat it out of season. I mean, if I see watermelon in the fall/winter, I'm not trying to have any; that would just mess up the order of things.

In the summer I'll go through one watermelon per week. Questions: What is the best method to pick a good watermelon? What do you consider "good"? |

Look for the melon with the biggest yellowish/white patch. From what I am told that shows that it had time to mature and ripen on the vine and will be the sweetest. Thumping is an old wives tale.

I agree that eating watermelon any other time outside of summer would throw off the cosmic order of things.
Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society Malcolm X, 1965 |

Fun fact: Watermelon is from Africa... Egyptians grew watermelons more than 5,000 years ago, decorating wall paintings with watermelon. From Egypt, watermelon's popularity grew as traders began selling seeds along Mediterranean trade routes. By the 10th century, watermelon made its way into China and by the 13th century, the Moors introduced watermelon into southern Europe. European colonists and African slaves are credited with bringing watermelon to North America. .. ... Modern varieties of the watermelon are derived from the native African vine Citrullus lanatus (or C. vulgaris). Cultivated for thousands of years in the Nile Valley, this species still grows wild in the arid interior where it supplies native people with water during drought seasons. Wild watermelons, called citron in Africa, have a spherical, striped fruit, and white, slightly bitter or bland flesh. The pale flesh tastes like the rind of a typical watermelon. http://darwin.nmsu.edu/~molbio/plant/watermelon.html Egungun, Egungun ni t'aiye ati jo! Ancestos, Ancestors come to earth and dance! \ IMHO, seedless watermelons don't have any taste to them. I got to have my seeds to spit. Watermelons even have mythology:
#1 - if you swallow a seed, you will become pregnant I love yellowmeat watermelon. My auntie taught me to sprinkle salt on it When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak Audre Lord |

Yesterday I walked past a supermarket and saw fresh cut watermelon on display outside. It's the friggin' end of November. No thanks!
Anyway on selecting.... "Although a seedless watermelon will ripen after it's picked, if you want it ripe when you buy it, look for a stem that's shrunken and discolored. If the stem is missing, the watermelon is too ripe; it will be mealy and dark and not taste fresh. If the stem is green - the watermelon is too green and not ripe. The skin should be dull, not shiny. Slap the melon and listen for a hollow thump. A yellow belly or the underside of the watermelon usually indicates the fruit is ripe." Anybody ever sprinkle salt on watermelon? *********************************** “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.†-- James Baldwin |

I agree with this. I look at the coloration but I also thump. Some people say that thumping is a wive's tale. It might be. But I'll confess I hoist that bad boy on my shoulder close to my ear and beat it like an Afrikan drum as I slowly turn it. I think you can detect over-ripeness that way. I've found that I pick a good one about 9 times out of 10. As for what constitutes good: I like the meat to be firm. It should offer some resistance when I sink my teeth in. But it should be crisp and squirt plenty of fresh tasting sweet juice when I bite down. I prefer it chilled. I like it with seeds or without. I've never had yellow meat before. How does it compare in taste?
No. |

What! you ain't had watermelon until you've sprinkled salt on it and chomped salty watermelon all the way down to the "Rime"! It's like eating green apple slices with salt. You've had that, right? I have known some ofays to pickle watermelon. RE: yellow meat watermelon. It's sweeter and more mellow at the same time, almost link a hint of papaya or maybe plum taste.
