While the idea of this whole *No-Black/No-White/Only-One America* concept is currently being made famous by Senator Obama from his 2004 Convention speech, it is actually the celebration of MLK that is making me ask today whether or not this thing is for real. The idea of *One America* reminds me of the Star Trek series (the original) … something futuristic but imagined to be real or at least possible! A concept that went so far beyond real life … and one that didn’t catch on very fast. The show only ran for about 2 seasons because there wasn’t very much interest at the time.

However, today that future is here, and we really can talk computers … and they talk back. Men (and women) are flying through space on a regular basis. All we’re missing is a Vulcan, and I suspect we have one of those on the board, too. Wink

Martin spoke and talked and dreamed of a *One America* as well back in the 60’s when it was the furthest thing from the truth. While most leaders before him advocated the unity of the Black community first and foremost, MLK wanted equality and justice for all. We were in a fight for AMERICA, not just for ourselves … we were all in this together … we were one, and should move forward accordingly.

Well, I don’t see one America in the place that I live. In fact, with this historic election in full force, I see divisions I didn’t realize were so deep. Of course there is the Black vs. White, the Black vs. Everybody else, the White vs. Everybody else, and Everybody vs. Everybody else, too! Sometimes it is ourselves against each other. But, the racial split is only the beginning of it. We also have women vs. women, with Oprah having to defend her race against her gender from her fans. And, surprisingly to me, our men, our Black men, are demanding that we make the same choice or face the dreaded label of *traitor* because we cannot so easily split ourselves in two for them, beingonly “Black” and disregarding our womanhood like yesterday’s trash.

But, the question I keep asking myself is, ultimately, isn’t this *One America* thing supposed to be the goal? Confused Aren’t we supposed to striving to be one big happy country where racial differences no longer matter and there is equality for all? Or are we, as a people, aiming only for equality … to have everything be ‘the same as …’ but to retain our own separate individuality as a race? While *colorblind* is about as conceptual as Star Trek was -- seems impossible and certainly not a reality now -- are Black people hoping that that’s what America becomes?

A lot of White folks these days appear to be ready to jump on that *One America* bandwagon, as evidenced by the large support shown to Obama in this campaign. And also by their reverence to MLK. His dream is all they know, but that dream was about unity … and many seem to want to ‘wake up’ to that reality. In fact, they seem to think that everything is hunky-dory right now, and to hear them tell it, we have already overcome. But, those same folk, when the matter of race actually becomes an issue, it’s back to “us” and “them”, “me” or “you”, which is back to the reality of where we really are today.

If we were going to embrace this *One America* concept, then Hillary would have to stop being WHITE before she is a woman, and Barack would have to stop being BLACK before he is a man. According to him (and starting with MLK), that difference that doesn’t even matter anymore. But nothing could be farther than the truth. When you look at his support from the Black community because he is Black how can there be no sense of racial preference? Even though he says he wants to be elected as an American ... not a Black man, that’s not the reality of the way it will go down if he should win. And on the gender side, there is very little understanding, even from our own. Black women are under attack by both Black men and White women, with sometimes very mean and hurtful things being said.

So, to me, this *One America* concept is at once a fact, a fiction, and a fantasy. Moreover, it’s a future I can’t even figure out if we want. 19 Do we really want to come together for the common good? Are we willing to reach out and embrace EVERYONE as our brother and/or sister? Are we willing to let them embrace us in the same way? We don’t act like it. We don’t talk about it. Equality is one thing … total harmony is another. Today’s “leaders” are advocating hard for a *One America* for all of us. And the question is, are we really going to follow them to it? Confused

When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak

fro Heck no. Or better....Hell to the Nawl... This just sounds good and look good on paper. But the reality is people are going to continue to profile each other. There's this stigma generationally where "massa's children" has continue to use racial tactics to block jobs, housing and human rights. They do in a subtle way...almost unrecognizable....until someone keen sees and screams racist And then Massa say "oops my bad. No Johnny you know better." But Johnny doesn't know better, he only knows what he sees his parents do...and repeat the actions of his parents or surrounding environment. So....IMO, One America is like saying to a hungry group of people, "there's this train that is offering jam and bread as you take a trip to a better place." Folks are sooooo hungry, the idea of any kind of food wets the palate and out of desperation they get on that train....once there, they realized they've been fooled by....the....GERMANS. Who announce "my bad....I forgot to tell you....on the train you will be eatin' your LAST meal. And the destination once you are off this train is where the "blue" smoke....over there...where those folks are standing in line. They're in line to take a shower. To freshen up." And still folks buy into it. And stand in line. Until they realize no one is coming out of the shower. And in realizing their fate, they try to turn around but can't. Many cry. "No fair. No fair." The soldier say...."There's no crying allowed." They were dubbed. So this story FOR ME tells it all. Just cuz they say it is so....DOESN'T mean it is so. And you have to take care responsibility of what you take in and believe otherwise you'll end up in a line, you didn't plan on being in. I know this sounds a bit drastic or absurd...but..hey you NEVER know with massa. Even today....he's STILL using the same ole line. And even today, folks are still falling for it...just cuz it sounds good or look good on paper. Cuz folks are soooo desperate to believe in anything they feel is glorious even when the raw truth is striking them hard in their faces. I guess it's called "hope." People just want to "hope." But! Just my two cents....is all. fro

Fantasy. There was never an "One America", rather an America with many different Americas: black America, white America, Asian America, hispanic America...

I doubt there will ever be one America because Americans are too racist to unite.

That, and the idea is just unrealistic.

I agree with all of you. I don't see "One America" nor the potential for it happening anytime soon. I think too many of everybody (Black, white, Red, Yellow and Brown) are too prejudiced/racist, also.

But, I see two dynamics that may, against the odds, hasten in new blowing wind. The first, I've already mentioned is Obama's campaign ... something is going on with America ... I'm just not sure what!! Eek

And secondly, is the fact that today's youth are not bringing the burdens of the "race issue" with them into the 21st Century! A much larger percentage of them are of mixed-race themselves ... and they are just lot letting our concerns and prejudices be theirs.

Now, how that might ultimately turn out?? 19 Guess time will tell on that one.

fro My concern is that young folks don't FORGET! And don'T DISRESPECT what those before them have DONE to make it easy for them. It's easy for them to say ..."oh that was back then" and NOT understand the throttle of not being able at one time to walk down the street, sit in a restuarant of choice, VOTE, live WHEREVER you want, not be harrassed just because. Cuz then they take what others died for.... for granted. And that's not WHY it was done in the first place. For me words like LEGACY, TRADITION, GENERATION mean a lot to me. Cuz I was there. And I saw the fear....and witnessed the HATE and demeaning and degrading way MASSA treated us....I saw his upfront ARROGANCE and priviledge disposition....that's why the first thing I did with my children before they could even read....was stuck a BOOK about Black History in the faces. They grew up knowing about our Black heroes....so when they got in middle and high school RACIST teachers couldn't pull the wool over their heads....like they tried to. A couple of my kids got in trouble with a white teacher cuz they DISAGREE with several teaching methods and out out lies she was trying to tell the class. Many letters came home threatening to fail them. But! when she saw my BLACK face and the fact that I was taking up for my children....with BOOKS in hand, she quietly digress. And no she didn't fail them. In fact, one of them received an A, the other a B. I was NOT playing with girlfriend. But many young Black parents are not educating themselves so they can be up with what's going on. They are letting the schools do it and that's NOT good in my opinion. But! This is a wait and see kinda thang...and so far these young people have been on it....hopefully they will not be BOUGHT...AND hopefully....they shall NOT BE MOVED. That's what I'm hoping anyway. fro
