I thought that the comments were also quite interesting, particularly the last one. When I saw that he was speaking at an ACG Church, I thought, "that is the theological antithesis of Trinity."

I would argue the "liberationist" strain in the black church is a fairly small strain nation wide.
The problem that I find is twofold Kresge: 1. Blacks are looking for a Messiah as opposed to a President. 2. Many black folks think there is only one way to progress, and that way happens to be their way. |

I can certainly see how people will come to those conclusions, religion and churches being the sticky issues that they are, but I like to think there is something else at play here. Take a figure like Paul for instance, who had to turn his back on the constrictions of Judaic Law in order to give order to the new church as it were. Of course Judaism is alive and well still, but look what has come of the efforts of Paul.
I also like to think, that like Paul, Obama having been steeped in the tradition of Trinity, that such an ideology is not so easily rinsed from some one. And while racism is very much at play in america, there is a lot of classism in america as well. Obama has said that he thinks that many of the issues in the black community are not racist but are classist. It is my opinion that the only way to reveal one is to eliminate the other as a possibility or at least minimize it as an actuality. If it were to me, I would just as soon he did not go to church at all. That he were a deist in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson or Oprah Winfrey or something. I admire Trinity and Jeremiah Wright a lot, but after he acted an ass on national television (not that youtube shit, but the National Press Club shit), dropping him like a three foot putt seemed like a decent option. But I would like to think that twenty years of discipleship would not drop off that easily. What is more important here, that he go to church or get elected as president of the united states? My question Wiz is this...why is it that folks think an individual should conform to a church doctrine instead of finding a church that conforms to the persons personal goals?
It is clear to me that the critique of Obama leaving Rev Wright is based upon him selling out the church for political expediency. If you asked me personally however if I would leave a church because it conflicted with my personal goals, I would be out like shout. In fact, that is why MOST people leave a church, because they are looking for something more satisfying in some way or another. I don't think he could make it as a deist because so much of our experience is based on Christianity, and also him being able to claim Christianity is an offset to those who try to paint him a Muslim. |

Seems strange to see you talking about "personal goals" with respect to participation in church activities. At any rate, I don't see how Trinity the church itself can cause such a conflict. Of course personalities themselves differ, but the Principles and philosphies of the church which does good for many people, shouldn't cause conflict unless your "personal goal" is to make your life palatable for white consumption... I would agree with you that the liberationist strain is a significant minority position in the black church. I would also agree with your assessment that black folk are looking for a Messiah as opposed to a President, and Obama wants to be the latter, not the former. I also found it interesting if the interview is accurate, what Obama claims to be looking for in a church. That is neither Trinity or the Apostolic tradition. Trinity is a more activist oriented church, and the Apostolics are Pentecostal/Holiness in orientation (no drinking, smoking, dancing, women in positions of authority). This group is also teaches the doctrine of Oneness (they are anti-trinitarian, that God is not three persons/one essence as is the orthodox position). Aside - You know, I just realized that he spoke at a church that was anti-Trinity in more ways than one. Anyway, he probably should attend a good Presbyterian or Episcopal congregation, if what he is looking for is accurate. Truth is undoubtedly the sort of error that cannot be refuted because it was hardened into an unalterable form in the long baking process of history... He rejects thes preachers: Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan and Wright, then steps into the pulpit of condemnation himself. I'd say he's pretty comfortable with the trappings of "Messiah"... Senator Obama really only confirmed my suspicions about him regarding his faith, which is:
1. He was a part-time pew warmer. 2. After 20 years, he was still a "babe" in Christ, which, even though it's typical, it's unacceptable. 3. He validated the notion that Trinity gave him street cred. I believe that 1 and 2 are definitely true, and 3 is a very good guess. This is why when white folks get all bent about this "he was in that Church for 20 years..", I bust them out. He probably truly DIDN'T hear or come across a lot of the so-called "incendiary" teachings or messages because his ass wasn't even there. How you gonna defend OR rebuff stuff you don't even know about? On another note, one of the bloggers at Townhall put up some of up Jeremiah Wrights letters (Pastor's Page) Interesting stuff.. http://radioblogger.townhall.com/blog ************************* I don't believe that for a minute! |
